India Lunch

Bangalore, January 15, 2012

Makar Sankranthi – Festival of Sun God – was the occasion of a Sunday Luncheon to celebrate the coming of the New Year.

According to the lunar calendar, it is at this moment that the sun moves from the Tropic of Cancer to the Tropic of Capricorn. The sun was worshipped by the Vedic peoples, not once but three times a day.

It was thus a fitting occasion for Bailliage of Bangalore to indulge in a five-course culinary feast. Having gathered on the rooftop terrace, General Manager Mahesh Aiyar, welcomed everyone with a variety of delicate amuse-bouche including a macaroon tartlet base topped with smoked salmon, crab mousse and Parma ham. Perfectly-chilled Piper Heidsieck Champagne was served for the aperitif.

Chef Rôtisseur Arzooman had created a menu including Prosecco-battered prawns, Red beet sorbet, Leg of lamb cooked ‘sous-vide’ and Alaskan salmon in Pinot Noir syrup. The courses were paired with 2010 New Zealand Saint Claire Marlborough Pinot Noir, 2010 Sauvignon Blanc and, from Italy, 2008 Brancaia Rosso Toscano.

The finale to the feast was served on the lawn of roof terrace where we were also enthralled by a live-cooking demonstration on a 600-years-old salt stone from the Himalaya region.

This lunch was a wonderful start to 2012 for the 31 members and their guests who were served by a 36-strong kitchen and service brigade. The event was so delightful and inspiring that at least four guests expressed their interest in joining the Confrérie!

An extra cause for celebration was the announcement by Anja Matysik-Kroll that Vice-Chancelier Rishad Minocher was being promoted to become Bailli of Bangalore now that she too had been promoted … to be Bailli Délégué of India.
