Spain Dinner

Madrid, January 25, 2012

The Restaurante St James group in Madrid is owned and managed by our Echanson, Jose Luis Armengol. In the spirit of Chaîne conviviality he invited members and their guests for an evening of gastronomy and entertainment at the Restaurante St James Casa Quemada in Northwest Madrid.

After the cocktail reception, we were regaled with a menu comprising:

Lobster bisque sprinkled with chopped shrimp

Levant-style stew of medallions of monkfish with giant scarlet prawns [1] and steamed vegetables

Pink grapefruit interlude

Fillet of beef stuffed with chanterelles flavoured with raspberry vinegar

Apple tart with vanilla ice-cream and ‘leche frita’ [2]

As well as being superbly cooked, the presentation of each course together with the efficient service very much lived up to the aspirations of the high turnout of members for this exceptional event.

A nice end to the evening was having the opportunity to dance into the night.

'El carabinero' (Aristaeopsis edwardsiana) is a crustacean decapod like a prawn but significantly larger and with a darker red colour.

‘Leche frita’ is a Spanish speciality made with sweetened milk that has been cooked and thickened with flour and corn starch and flavoured with a stick of cinnamon. The resulting custard is poured into a shallow dish and refrigerated. Once cool and firm the custard is removed from the dish and cut into squares. The squares are dipped in flour and egg and are then fried.
