Australia Chapitre

Townsville (Queensland), April 10-11, 2014

The Bailliage of Australia initiated a new local Bailliage at a Chapitre in Townsville (Queensland) where 31 new members were inducted into the Chaîne.

Ted Grinsted, in his capacity as a Member Honoraire of the Conseil Magistral, presided over the Induction Ceremony during which were inducted Norm Harrison as the new Bailli Délégué of Australia, Sam Giddings as Chancelier, Shymal Dhar as Bailli of Brisbane and Lee Noble as Bailli of Townsville, together 27 new members.

Champagne flowed after the ceremony. The celebratory reception was followed by an exquisite cocktail party held at Jam Corner where the menu highlighted locally sourced and seasonal produce.

Jam Corner is one of Townsville’s restaurants recognised for their culinary excellence as they received an AGFG Chef Hat for 2014 (the second year in a row). A great start to 2014 for them! “It’s a huge honour” said Chef Matt Merrin who was inducted on the night as a Maître Rôtisseur.

Prior to the Induction evening, Michel’s Restaurant was the venue for a delightful dinner on the Thursday. We were served contemporary Australian and French influenced cuisine, brought to us by our passionate and experienced owner chefs, Jason Makara (a new Chaîne member Maître Rôtisseur) and Craig Smith. As Townsville Restaurants continue to be recognised by the industry this city is gaining the reputation as ‘food mecca’ of North Queensland.

The whole event went off “like a blast” – literally so on the Friday given that as the Ceremony was in full flow so was the weather. Townsville was in the middle of a cyclone with 120 kilometres per hour winds!

New Bailli Lee Noble and her vibrant team, which includes Jean Krogh, Marie Orchard and Miranda Kelly, earned my full support and deserve much admiration for their skill and professional approach which in 20 weeks made this Chapitre happen.

I am looking forward to working with them going forward as more members are welcomed into the wonderful world of the Chaîne. In fact, already five more have joined this new Bailliage and are looking forward to enjoy future functions and camaraderie which is the hallmark of the Confrérie.

A special thank you is due to the team at the International HQ in Paris for all their help and assistance in making this new Bailliage possible. Last but not least, my personal thanks go to my good friend Ted Grinsted. He is a true friend and statesman – the perfect choice therefore as Inducting Officer.
