Michelin 1-star dining for the Bailliage of Solent's AGM event

A beautiful spring day welcomed the members and guests at the Bailliage of Solent’s AGM Lunch at Ockenden Manor.

Ockenden Manor dates from 1520. In 1658, John Burrell, who had grown rich on the Sussex iron industry, bought the manor and extended it. The property remained in the Burrell family until the early 20th century.

Since 1987 Ockenden has been part of the Historic Sussex Hotels Group, the privately-owned collection of three distinctive luxury hotels set in some of the most beautiful locations in West Sussex. Its restaurant holds one star in the Michelin Guide.

Given the fine weather, the AGM was held in the garden with a civilised glass of Cava and accompanying canapés. We were delighted that, in her capacity as a member of the Bailliage of Solent, International Vice-President Marie Jones was present together with two of her daughters, Jane and Sarah. It was also a pleasure to greet Bailliage of Wessex member Jillian Gerlach.

The Michelin-starred food was much enjoyed with the three courses show-casing modern English cooking:

English asparagus soup
Sussex Cheddar and truffle toastie
Copperstone Creek Chardonnay 2012, Australia

Salad of home-smoked mackerel with beetroot, apple, horseradish
San Abello Sauvignon Blanc 2013, Chile

Sussex lamb: saddle, breast, falafel, croquette

courgette provençale, baba ganoush
Deen de Bortoli ‘Vat 10’ Pinot Noir 2011, Australia

Caramelised lemon tart with blackcurrant sorbet
La Playa Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc 2011, Chile

Coffee & Petits Fours

The mackerel salad went down swimmingly and the Sussex lamb was complimented by many on its tenderness. The relative lightness of the De Bertoli Vat 10 Pinot Noir went well with the meat.

To sum up, an agreeable lunch celebrated the AGM but the day was made by the lively and entertaining company.
