Netherlands Lunch

Vreeland, May 18, 2014

Immaculate matching of wine to menu enhances experience

On a nice day in May, members were already looking forward to an ‘outstanding’ lunch at the Michelin 1-star Restaurant De Nederlanden.

No more than 20 minutes by car from both Hilversum and Amsterdam, the hotel/restaurant is  is situated in a charming location near the old bridge in Vreeland on the banks of the River Vecht.

After the bubbles and amuses, the expections were clear: this should be a wonderful event!

Octopus - Ceasar - Saumonette

Halibut - Asparagus - Egg

Lamb - Broad Beans - Ramson

Cheese “for a gourmet lifestyle”

Eucalyptus - Red Fruit - Earl Grey

The starter was a maritime variant of a Caesar salad. For the fish course, the halibut was later in the afternoon described as ‘outstanding’ by Conseiller Culinaire Piet van den Bosch when reviewing the delightful menu we had been served.

The lamb was tender and superbly cooked. The cheese board was innovative with its local products as well as a special English blue cheese. A panna cotta with eucalyptus provided a mouth refreshing conclusion to the menu. Special mention must also be made of the selection of wines which took the food matching experience to a higher level.
