An interactive House of Piper-Heidsieck journey for the Bailliage of Western Australia

The sell-out evening was held at the illustrious Terrace Hotel in Perth.

Vice-Échanson David Irvine recited the Ordre Mondial pledge, gave a tastevin whistle-stop history and presented tasting cups to new members Chris Pye, Ken Coppin and David Rowbottam.

For the tutored tasting David introduced Perth Champagne Club’s Nick Gaskin. His desire to educate in a highly informative, amusing way meant we were taken by storm by his passion for champagne.

We started with Piper-Heidsieck Cuvee Brut NV. A subtle delighted it was perfectly accompanied by oysters and citrus caviar.

Next came Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve NV. A softer, more rounded flavour with a light toast finish was well matched with scallops, lemon balm foam, and pomegranate molasses.

Third up was Piper-Heidsieck Rosé Sauvage NV. A ‘curve ball’ displaying an amazing and unique colour with a deep crimson edge, it was served with king prawn tartare and charcoal wafers.

Our challenge from Nick was to give a one word description for each of the champagnes. A light-hearted yet serious debate ensued. The Rosé Sauvage certainly won the award for the most controversy regarding the flavour and description.

The penultimate offering of Piper-Heidsieck Brut Vintage 2006 was an amazing first-class journey of rich flavours, some butter, some caramel, matched with pork belly, apple crisp and cider reduction.

Obviously saving the best until last, Nick presented a world-class finale in the form of 2002 Piper Heidsieck Rare. Served with smoked salmon roulade, crème fraiche and rocket this wonderful champagne brought the house down, a virtual standing ovation with 100% satisfaction. Nick’s commentary of fantastic facts was the bubble on the mousse.

How had five hours passed so quickly? World-class in four senses: 5 champagnes, venue, guests and evening making a great start to the next 12 months. We say the Chaîne and Ordre Mondial provide experiences that “money can’t buy”. This was one!
