Spain Visit

San Vicente de la Barquera, November 8, 2014

Marvellous scenery and gastronomy on the Bay of Biscay coast

San Vicente de la Barquera is a town in Cantabria on the Bay of Biscay coast. As might be expected it is closely linked to the sea. This is evidenced by all its traditions. With the natural beauty of its extraordinary landscape, ecologically sound tourism is most important to the town’s economy.

We were booked to stay at the Hotel Verdemar with its views of the mountains and the sea. On arrival in the morning we were greeted by the Mayor who I am delighted to say was displaying the Chaîne emblem in our honour.

With the formalities concluded we continued on a short distance to the nearby village of Prellezo where we had a Cantabrian mountain-style lunch at the Pensión/Restaurante Quintana. Outstanding!

Rural tourism has become a mainstay of the economy. For the courageous there are amazing places to practice sports such as whitewater rafting, canyoning and surfing. On the other hand, there are those like us who simply enjoy sightseeing and relaxing in the freshness and calm of a pleasant landscape where we can forget life in a city. When one adds in the pleasure of sampling the natural, local cuisine, indifference to the overall environment is not likely.

That evening we dined at the Restaurante Boga-Boga, owned by Chaîne member Antonio Rodríguez Cortavicerdi. During the course of the dinner we presented him with his Chaîne Professional’s Plaque.

For 50 years the Boga-Boga has been a benchmark establishment in San Vicente. Its traditional, simple yet delicious cuisine features lots of seafood. The most popular dish is a marmite of lobster with potatoes, onion, red and green pepper, saffron, tomato puree, brandy and olive oil. Frankly it was delicious – a real delicacy that did not fail to excite everyone.

Thus ended our visit to San Vicente de la Barquera.
