Martinmas celebrated across the border in Austria

To celebrate the feast day of St. Martin of Tours (November 11th) we travelled across the border into Austria to share traditional Austrian ‘Martinigansl’ (roasted goose) with the members of the local Bailliage of Vorarlberg.

In the Restaurant Stadtgasthaus of the Hotel Weisses Kreuz in Bregenz we were received by mine host Andrea Kinz (who is Vice-Chancelier/Argentier of the Bailliage of Vorarlberg). She offered us Schilcher Frizzante from her home region of Styria mixed with blackcurrant liqueur.

We were then ushered to the beautifully laid table in the dining room. The menu commenced with goose liver parfait wonderfully combined with pan-fried goose liver served with fig chutney, brioche and glazed apple. Partnered with a fresh white wine it made for a fantastic start!

Then Bailli Délégué Daniel Jäggi asked Chancelier Honoraire Rolf Santo-Passo to give a short presentation on the importance of geese in former times and their significance for the Guild of Goose Roasters, the forerunner of the modern-day Chaîne.

Without further ado we continued with goose velouté served with breaded curd cheese dumplings and then on to the main course: succulent organic goose breast and leg served with quince and red cabbage, chestnuts and potato dumplings. The mouth-watering menu was rounded off with delicious parcels filled with Lake Constance pears.

Each course was complemented by wonderful Austrian wines which together with the wonderful food made for an exceptional dinner. As a result, the kitchen and service brigades were loudly applauded for their outstanding efforts.

All in all it was a wonderful Martinmas event that will long linger in our memories. Time simply flew by and the evening could have gone on forever had it not been for the scheduled coach trip at midnight to return home back across the border at midnight.
