Turkey Malt Whisky Tasting

Chaîne friends in Istanbul celebrate the ‘water of life’

The Ordre Mondial section of the Bailliage of Istanbul began its 2015 programme of events with a Scotch malt whisky tasting.

Tom Jones, Johnny Walker Brand Ambassador and a ‘Keeper of the Quaich’, who quipped that he ‘lives in his suitcase’, was visiting Istanbul and therefore conducted the presentation. It was a memorable tasting experience with six single malt whiskies each paired with suitable dishes.



The tasting started with Cardhu, a 12-year old Speyside malt. Its faintly earthy, nutty and citrus aromas with silky, smoky finish gently accompanied a salmon with peanut mousse. Cragganmore, another one from Speyside, with its fruity aromas, hints of caramel and spicy flavours well received the elegant flavours of pear and beetroot braised in Earl Grey tea. The 14-year old, smoky, spicy and smooth Oban was coupled with the quail and pumpkin ravioli.



The perfect match of Talisker and caviar blintze followed. Truffled celery and apple velouté with corn bread’s elegant flavours were embraced by the earthy, salty and smoky flavours of Caol Ila from Islay. Lastly, everybody enjoyed the cheese and dried plum plate partnered by a 16-year old Lagavulin with its very strong touch of smoke, peat and salt, yet floral too.



The event was graciously sponsored and hosted by Mey/Diageo Türkiye at their International Wine and Spirits Academy (IWSA1) premises. The industrial aesthetics of its minimalist architecture created a feeling of being similar to a modern-day distillery.

At the end of the evening, those who had never welcomed the intervention of any taste with their malts other than a drop of water certainly left the Academy with their eyes opened and with ideas in their mind.

The event was a wonderful celebration of the ‘water of life’!
