Canada 50th Anniversary Grand Chapitre

Montreal, October 27-30, 2011

The Bailliage du Montreal was delighted to host the 50th Anniversary celebrations and Grand Chapître of Canada.

Our National Council, visiting Provincial and local Baillis, together with confrères from across Canada and around the world, enjoyed a wonderful weekend of events surrounded by Montreal’s renowned duality of Old World charm infused with North American energy.

The programme began Thursday evening with a Chaîne Chef’s Table Dinner Dine-Around offered by six Chaîne member restaurants. Early Friday morning, as the National Final of the Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition was being held at College LaSalle, Chaîne members were able to participate in a unique selection of tours covering the history and culture of Quebec and Montréal.

On Friday evening, a welcoming Grand Reception, catered by The Fairmont le Reine Elizabeth was held in the wonderful Maison du Gouverneur. The Maison du Gouverneur was built in 1895 and named after Charles-Amédée-Vallée, the last Governor of Montreal prison.

The prison itself, which is only steps away from the Maison du Gouverneur, has housed the head office of the Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ) since 1921. The SAQ's wine storage cellar, located next to the Galerie du Gouverneur, will soon house an unprecedented collection of 75,000 bottles. Tours of the wine cellar and prison during the evening were truly fascinating.

The National Council meetings were held Saturday morning at The Fairmont le Reine Elizabeth. At the conclusion of the meetings, the National Board of Directors, local Baillis and guests adjourned to a wonderful luncheon complemented by great wines at one of Montreal’s finest restaurants: Birk’s Cafe.

On Saturday evening, Michel Busch, Bailli of Montreal, opened the festivities by greeting all in attendance at the Induction Ceremony.

David Tétrault, Member of the Conseil d’Administration, Bailli Délégué, delivered his welcoming address and in a special presentation, David recognized two founding members of the Montreal Bailliage: Mario Dumesnil and the first Bailli Délégué of Canada, Rolland Douville.
Rolland was also awarded the Chaîne Gold Medal later in the proceedings. Vince Parkinson, Chancelier, then announced the winners of the National Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs competition.

Benoît Fragnière, Member of the Conseil d’Administration from Switzerland, presided over the Induction Ceremony assisted by David Tétrault. Benoît began by expressing his pleasure at being appointed to preside over such an important occasion. He outlined the many links between Switzerland and Canada over the years and briefly recapped the history of the Chaîne for the Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs in attendance.

David Tétrault then concluded the preliminaries by reading a message of congratulations on the 50th Anniversary from President Yam Atallah. At the end of the presentations and the inductions, Greg Eisenmenger, Jurisconsult for the Bailliage of USA and a Chaine Ambassador of the United States, presented a special award to David Tétrault in recognition of the 50th Anniversary.

Following the Induction Ceremony attendees retired to the main lobby of The Fairmont le Reine Elizabeth for a champagne reception and silent auction as they awaited the remainder of the evening’s activities.

The Gala Dinner was held in the hotel’s magnificent Ballroom As the doors opened from lobby area, the 170 guests were treated to a beautifully-arranged seating area with soaring centrepieces. The Gala Dinner moved smoothly through a series of superb courses perfectly accompanied by exquisite wines.

As we reached our dessert course, the sounds of a “Jazz band” broke out. The band marched through the room, followed by the serving staff waving sparklers and a magnificent 50th Anniversary cake. Just when the cake was nearing its destination beside the podium, the room erupted to the sounds of fireworks cleverly hidden in each table’s centrepiece. Truly a marvellous grand finale to a wonderful evening!
