Costa Rica Dinner

Playa Langosta, February 26, 2012

Lying just south of Tamarindo, one of the most popular destinations on the North Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, is the exotic and sandy beach of Playa Langosta. Known for its amazing surfing and gorgeous beachfront bed and breakfasts that line the shore, Playa Langosta is ideal for those who want to have some fun while enjoying the stunning beauty of the area.

The surfers who come from the four corners of the world mostly have limited budgets for dining out. However, through the good offices of Vice-Chargé de Missions Donovan Garcia, we were introduced to the Restaurant Langosta Beach Club and its owners from two French families: Managers Arnaud Vignon and Magaly Moles, Executive Chef Nicolas Vignon and Maître D’ Oliver Moles.

We had made an advance visit to check out the culinary talents of the Chef. For the formal event we decided on dinner under the stars.

The cocktail reception with its Crémant de Bourgogne sparkling wine and canapés was the prelude to a marvellous evening of finely prepared food.

To start we very much enjoyed a Scallop vol-au-vent made with goat’s cheese-flavoured pastry. We followed with grilled langoustines with tartare sauce and an accompanying bisque.

For the main course, there was a choice of mahi mahi fish with a watercress cream sauce or traditional pavé of beef with pepper sauce enhanced with Gorgonzola.

Dessert was a chocolate soufflé with vanilla ice cream served with an Argentinean sweet wine: Las Perdices Viognier Late Harvest.

This wine from Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo, was golden yellow in colour. It had aromas of apricots and peaches, with notes of honey and spices. On the palate it was smooth with a predominance of ripe fruit.

What a pleasure to find during this dinner in Costa Rica all the qualities of professionalism of which only the French have the secret.
