For our March event, we chose the Flamingo Marina Resort Hotel as the location.
It had been decided with Donovan Garcia, Vice-Chargé de Missions and Jorge Granados, Vice-Echanson, to have a Costa Rican buffet accompanied by a selection of Argentinean wines. Imagine therefore our immense surprise – and to our great delight – that owner, Ulrik Oldenburg, upgraded the event to a gastronomic dinner!
The hotel is located on the North Pacific Coast of Costa Rica in the province of Guanacaste. Situated 30 metres above the ocean, it has a spectacular panorama of Potrero Bay and the famous Playa Flamingo (Flamingo Beach).
It was in this wonderful setting that we held the reception at which was served López Brut, a sparkling Argentinean wine, accompanied by prosciutto and Greek olives with salami.
For the dinner that followed, the six courses with their matching Argentinean wines were:
- Prawn cocktail with palm hearts
Rincón Famosa Rosado
- Caribbean-style mahi-mahi with jasmine rice
Las Perdrices Pinot Grigio
- Tuna with sesame seeds and oriental sauce
Casona López Malbec
- Beef carpaccio with arugula salad and Balsamic vinaigrette
Las Perdrices Pinot Noir Reserva
- Red wine risotto with fillet of local beef
Las Perdrices Don Juan Grand Reserva
- Chocolate fondant with blackberries
Las Perdrices Ice
The menu was full of creative surprises and the wines were superb. Dining in the open air with a view over Potrero Bay included the opportunity to take in the spectacular sunset.
All the while a guitarist played Costa Rican favourites. It was a truly enchanting evening … and a bargain given the ticket price of only $35 per person!
