USA Cruise

Mediterranean Sea, May 20-28, 2012

We gathered in Rome from all corners of the globe for this historic cruise aboard the Wind Surf a beautiful four-masted schooner. This would be our home for the next eight days while we explored some of the most beautiful destinations in the Mediterranean.

Our first night began with Captain Alan MacAry welcoming us in his Scottish brogue. He quickly informed everyone “I just want to put your minds at ease as I do have a driver's license!”

Ron Overend, Bailli Provincial Caribbean/Atlantic Islands, welcomed everyone aboard on behalf of Bailli Délégué of  the USA  George Brown, Member of the Conseil d’Administration. Acknowledging Bailli Délégué Honoraire of South Africa Allison Rutowitz, Member Honoraire of the Conseil d’Administration, and her delegation, Ron then welcomed fellow Canadians, Bahamians and the rest of the truly international group.

We were off to a good start. The first stop was Portoferraio in Italy together with the picturesque port of Portofino. Back aboard the first of our Chaîne dinners was in preparation for our Wine-Makers Dinner by Celebrity Chef Art Smith and assisted by our 2011 International Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition winner, Reilly Meehan.

Arriving off the French Riviera we were soon to experience the 'lights, camera, action' as we arrived during the 65th Festival de Cannes.

For the next two days our yacht was only one of many anchored off shore. We then pulled up anchor to head a few kilometres along the coast to “Bridget Bardot” land. St. Tropez was at its glorious, sunniest best.

While the Captain quietly guided our vessel in the middle of the night to our next port where we would spend the next two days and nights, the focus was on another exciting event: the Grand Prix de Monte Carlo.

Saturday, May 26, was special as 14 new members were inducted. Not to be forgotten from the programme were our two International competition Gold Medal winners, Sommelier Ian Cauble and Chef Reilly Meehan who did a fine job of putting on wine lectures and cooking demonstrations respectfully. Thanks to the Chaîne Foundation these young people had perhaps a trip of a lifetime, certainly not one they will forget any time soon.

The eight days flew by but how lucky we were to experience two of the world's most exciting venues cruising along the Italian and French Rivieras in fabulous weather!
