The Bailliage of Turkey inaugurates its fifth local Bailliage

The inauguration of Turkey’s fifth local Bailliage in the city of Izmir took place on May 26, 2012.

Izmir is a large metropolitan city located on the western Turkish Mediterranean coast. It has more than 3,500 years of recorded urban history and is the third most populated city in Turkey. It is one of the principle cities of the Mediterranean area and its port is Turkey’s primary one for export.

The idea of founding the new local Bailliage came from the fact that there were several residents of Izmir who were registered as members of either the Istanbul or Ankara Bailliages. Added to this was a significant increase in recent years in the number of hotels – both local and international groups – in the city thus resulting in a substantial increase of potential professional members.

The Bailli is Bὓlent Akgerman, a young businessman who was Turkey’s first member from Izmir when he joined the Chaîne back in 2005.

Anastase (“Tassos”) Kioulpapas, Member of the Conseil Magistral from Greece, presided over the Induction Ceremony which saw 42 new professional and non-professional members receive their Chaîne regalia. Within the same context, the Ordre Mondial des Gourmets Dégustateurs (OMGD) was also introduced to Izmir. All 42 new members, together with one existing member, were also inducted by Tassos in a separate ceremony.

The Induction Ceremony took place in the Convention Center of the Swissôtel Grand Efes Izmir. It was followed by a champagne cocktail at the hotel’s “Sky Bar” which has an excellent view of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Gala Dinner was held in the hotel’s Equinox Restaurant. Ninety participants enjoyed a six-course menu specially composed for the occasion by Executive Chef Wolfgang Goedl who is now Vice-Conseiller Culinaire of Izmir. The courses were paired with prime wines from four different wine producers from the Izmir region.
