Turkey Dinner

Istanbul, June 2, 2012

An Italian/Turkish friendship dinner was at the Şans Restaurant in Istanbul. It was was attended by 45 Bailliage of Italy members from Udine, Florence, Piacenza, Trento, Napoli, and Milano.

The group was headed by Chancelier Bruno Peloi, who is also Bailli of Udine. Joining them were 35 Bailliage of Turkey members from Istanbul led by Bailli Délégué Mohamed Hammam, Member of the Conseil d’Administration.

The idea of this joint friendship event came up when Roberto Zanghi, Member of the Conseil Magistral and Bailli Délégué of Italy, informed Mohamed that a group from Italy was planning a visit to Istanbul and would like to meet him and his wife.

Mohamed however responded by proposing to arrange a joint Bailliage event so that the members from both countries can meet and get to know each other. This initiative has been welcomed and has attracted the interest from both sides, with more Turkish members who wanted to attend, but were not able due to limited seating capacity.

A six course “Ottoman Cuisine” (Palace cuisine) menu was specially composed by Executive Chef Ali Sarigul. The courses were paired with a selection of prime Turkish wines.

A special pin, marking the occasion and featuring the Italian and Turkish flags was presented to all participants as a gesture from the restaurant owner, Niso Adato – Echanson of Turkey. As usual, Turkey’s Master Chocolatier, Officier Maître Restaurateur Harry Lenas, brought his famous Chaîne-logoed marzipan chocolate for everyone to enjoy. In addition, courtesy of the Kayra Winery, a half bottle of Kayra Vintage Merlot 2010, with a special sticker including the two national flags, was presented to everyone as a memento of the event.

At the conclusion of the dinner service Bruno and Mohamed exchanged specially-prepared plaques. Everyone acknowledged that it was indeed a great and friendly event, one that should be repeated – in Italy next time.
