Germany Grand Chapitre

Magdeburg, May 17-20, 2012

The 80th Grand Chapitre of Germany took place in Magdeburg, capital of Saxony-Anhalt, from May 17-20. Bailli Dierk Horstmann and his Bailliage officers made a great effort to excite us with a varied programme.

Integrated into the events of the Grand Chapitre was the 2012 National Final of the Jeunes Sommeliers Competition under the guidance of Echanson Natalie Lumpp.

Magdeburg’s rich historical past goes back to the year 805 when it was founded by Charlemagne. Otto I, first Holy Roman Emperor, lived here for most of his reign and is buried in the cathedral. An archbishopric since 968 and member of the Hanseatic League since the 13th century gives an idea of its importance in the Middle-Ages. In 1524 Martin Luther preached in Magdeburg where he had gone to school and quickly found adherents for his Protestant Reformation.

Another famous personality was Otto von Guericke in the 17th century who was Mayor and inventor of the Magdeburg Hemisphere. Famous musicians were Telemann in the Baroque style and very recently Tokio Hotel, a German rock band.

Members and their guests were very appreciative of the cultural highlights as well as those offered by the Chefs. They presented most stunning creations on our plates and the region yielded interesting wines to accompany them. The members also celebrated the seven young Sommeliers who had stood up to the challenge of the National Competition. As is always the case – unfortunately – only one can win. This year it was Peter H. Müller from the well-known Schlosshotel Lerbach whom we shall meet again in Cape Town for the International Final of the Competition.

This was another memorable Grand Chapitre that brought many friends together.

Vive la Chaîne !
