Turkey Wine Tasting

Istanbul, July 28, 2012

The Bailliage of Turkey gave pride of place to yet another local boutique wine producer, Babare Wines with a theme of ‘Savour the produce from Turkish organic and bio-dynamic vineyards’.

The event was held at Şans Restaurant in Istanbul and was attended by some thirty Ordre Mondial members.

Barbare Wines was represented by its owner, Can Topsakal, accompanied by his French consultant, Xavier Vignon. They enlightened the group with the success story of the vineyards, and introduced their excellent wines.

Barbare Wines was established some 10 years ago. The region’s climate, the soil profile of the vineyards and the topography of the site were examined very carefully. As a result, it was decided to plant five internationally reputed grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre, on 23 hectares (57 acres) of land. From the outset, viticulture and vinification has been overseen by Xavier Vignon, a renowned and in-demand oenologist. He lives in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, France, and in his capacity as consultant to Barbare he visits the vineyard every month.

The vineyards are farmed using organic, sustainable and bio-dynamic methods. The owner of the winery, Can Topsakal, underlined the minimum yield strategy couple with aiming for quality not quantity. He has a dream to produce fine wines which can be cellared for more than 20 years.

The wines have attracted the attention of wine professionals and have achieved very good results in both national and international competitions.

Seven wines were presented for tasting at the event:

- Barbare Sauvignon Blanc 2010
- Barbare Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot 2009
- Barbare Syrah/Grenache/Mourvèdre 2009
- Barbare Prestige 2009, Barbare Elegance 2009

The tasting was followed by a complementary outdoor cocktail party at the Garden Bar of the restaurant. Here the group was able to continue the enjoyment by drinking their preference of the eight wines previously tasted accompanied by a variety of hot and cold canapés especially prepared by Chef Rôtisseur, Executive Chef Ali Sarigul.

A special personalized Certificate was presented to each of the participants by Can Topsakal as recognition from Barbare Wines for attending the tasting event. Furthermore, Mr. Topsakal extended a complimentary membership of the “Barbare Wine Club” to all Turkey-wide Chaine members.
