Bailliage of Istanbul: An historic event at the residence of the French Consul General

The highlight of the Bailliage of Istanbul’s programme of events so far this year was a Gala Dinner at the historic Palais de France.

The Palais de France is the home of the French Consul General to Istanbul. It is the grandest palace in the central Istanbul district of Beyoğlu. It dates back to 1525 when Franҫois I of France was the first European monarch to establish diplomatic relations with the Ottoman Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. At that time the area was mostly vineyards. In 1581 the Sultan gave the land to France to establish its embassy complex.

The Palace was completely renovated in 2009-2010. This happened during the term of the current Consul General, Monsieur Herve Magro, whose wife Madame Maria Magro is a Dame de la Chaîne member of the Bailliage of Turkey.

In 2011, M. & Mme Magro extended an invitation to host a Chaîne gala event at their newly-renovated palace. The limited kitchen facilities presented a challenge for which, thanks to the Mövenpick Hotel Istanbul, a solution was found. The Mövenpick mobilised their kitchen, service equipment and required personnel to bring the event to fruition.

The print was hardly dry on the invitations before the 90 places were taken!

As participants arrived at the Palace they were greeted by M. & Mme Magro, together with Bailli Délégué Mohamed Hammam. The cocktail reception was in the Palace Hall where the  Mövenpick’s Master Bartender had created several especially for this event, such as ‘kir de la Chaîne’, ‘Cocktail Henry IV’ and ‘Cocktail Louis Philippe’.

The specially-composed six-course French-inspired menu was served in the elegantly-decorated Ballroom. The Mövenpick’s Executive Chef Giovanni Terracciano and his kitchen brigade regaled us with their take on many French favourites.

In keeping with the theme, each course was paired with a French wine ...

- Pouilly Fumé ‘Indigène’ 2004
- Chablis 2011 by Michel Laroche
- Château Bellegrave, Pomerol 2005
- Hauts de Pontet Canet, Pauillac 2004
- Château Suduiraut, Sauternes 1999

After the coffee and petits fours, Bailli Délégué Mohamed Hammam took great delight in thanking M. & Mme Magro for hosting this unique event at their historic palace. He presented them with a Bailliage of Turkey commemorative plaque in great appreciation of their hospitality.

He continued by recognising the considerable contribution to the success of the event by the Mὂvenpick’s Executive Chef, Giovanni Terracciano, and by Food & Beverage Manager Bahadir Gunday, together with their respective kitchen and service brigades.

Thereafter, Monsieur Magro invited everyone to take a tour of the Palace and its historic garden.
