Malaysia Dinner

Kota Kinabalu, September 28, 2013

Bailliage of Sabah ‘Havana Heaven’ themed event

Members and their guests filled the Pavilion at the Shangri-la Rasa Ria Resort with an air of festivity for a ‘Havana Heaven’ themed event. A Cuban cigar roller at work and a serenading trio contributed greatly to creating the atmosphere for a Cuban night of fun, friendship, exquisite food and wine.

Sabah is a vibrant destination for travellers who want a close experience with nature. It is located on the island of Kalimantan in the eastern part of Malaysia. The island's many natural attractions are complemented by a fascinating local culture that has preserved centuries-old ways of living into the present day. Shangri-La's Rasa Ria Resort on Pantai Dalit Beach is set amidst a nature reserve. The resort enchants endlessly with its natural magic.

The initial plan was to have the event as a barbecue on the beach and thus for practical reasons, a decision was made for ribbons not to be worn. Nevertheless all the trappings of a Chaîne event were much in evidence. The Chaîne flag and banners were prominently displayed. The table settings incorporated the Chaîne logo as did the white chocolate dessert.

However, even in paradise the weather is not always clement. As a result of persistent rain we had to move indoors where Champagne, vodka on ice carvings and Martinis encouraged the appetite for the good things to come.

An expansive array of appetizers from freshly shucked oysters to salads and cold cuts adorned the buffet table. Baked Mediterranean sea bass, roasted New Zealand saddle of lamb, grilled Australian rib eye beef and Chinese five-spiced duck were on offer for the main course. Members of the service brigade, dressed in traditional, colourful Cuban attire, manned the exciting dessert table.

The highlight of the evening was the silent auction which saw lots such as fine wines, cigars, hotel stays and air tickets raising nearly 13,000 Malaysian Ringgit (4,000 US$) for the Don Bosco Children’s Home in Ranau and the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre.

The conclusion of the evening saw the cigar roller hard at work keeping up with demand from those who wished to indulge in the pleasure of smoking a fine cigar whilst enjoying their fine cognac or single malt whisky.
