Germany Dinner

Bailliage of Berlin–Brandenburg - Berlin, January 28, 2012

For mind and palate: A New Year's Speaker Dinner

For the third year running a New Year’s dinner with a guest speaker was held at the Grand Hyatt Berlin. As before, it was an excellent choice of venue.

An equally good choice was the dinner speaker. Jörg Schönbohm is  not only a retired Lieutenant General, Inspector of the Army and Senator, he is also a Chevalier d'Honneur in the Chaîne but most importantly, an engaging conversationalist.

The reception, with Champagne De Saint Gall Brut Tradition and elegant hors d’oeuvres, was a worthy start to this New Year’s event.

It had been a good seven weeks since we had last dined together so it was a busy time wishing everyone Happy New Year!

Eventually Bailli Thomas Wachs encouraged us to be seated at table and welcomed our guests, particularly our acclaimed speaker.

Dinner commenced with foie gras with fig and pear, delightfully partnered by a 2008 Gewürztraminer Spätlese Trocken. There followed lobster with mango and tarragon, then halibut with a creamy watercress sauce.

Three courses in and it was the occasion for our confrère, Jörg Schönbohm, to present a 20-minute discourse themed "freedom".

More than living up to expectation, Jörg was most entertaining with his balance of serious philosophical observations and fine dose of humour. The applause clearly demonstrated that politicians can display much humanity and therefore be quite convincing.

Back to the food, the main course was sautéed veal and braised cheek with truffled ‘Linda’, meaning not an aromatised lady but the speciality German potato with a firm texture and pale yellow colour!

To complete the wonderful five-course menu, dessert was a selection of Valrhona chocolate creations.

Chef Rôtisseur Josef Eder accepted an engraved commemorative award on behalf of General Manager Fred Hürst. The kitchen and service brigades received well earned applause for the excellent cooking and the attentive service.
