Finland Cookery Competition

A long-standing supporter of the Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition, for the first time ever the Bailliage of Finland organised a cooking competition for amateur members.

Following a preliminary round, six members competed for the title in the National Final which was held the in the Jyväskylä Trade Centre during a notable Food & Wine exhibition.

The first National Amateur Champion Chef in Finland is Dame de la Chaîne Päivi Durchman who won with her innovative, well-balanced and delicious menu.

Päivi said that she prepared herself for the competition by cooking the whole menu several times at home where her husband had acted as the judge. The Runner-up, only three points behind the winner, was Chevalier Toivo Pönni. Other participants were Chevaliers Alex d'Anci, Olavi Kokkonen, Jari Nerjanto and Jari Raulo.

In the final the task was to plan and prepare a three-course menu with a starter of pike-perch, a main course where the essential ingredient was organic beef sirloin and a dessert which had to be a combination of apples and lingonberries.

The list of the main ingredients had been issued to the contestants before the competition, then on the day itself they had four hours to prepare the menu. Kitchen assistants came from the Jyväskylä Educational Consortium.

Judging used the same criteria as for Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition. Leader of the competition, Conseiller Culinare Martti Lehtinen, had anticipated a high standard in the final given the skills demonstrated in the preliminary competition. He was not to be disappointed!

   

The Bailliage is grateful for the support given to this first competition by Electrolux. During the weekend of the Food and Wine exhibition, the Bailliage also organised a competition for the best traditional Finnish meatballs prepared by school children in the Jyväskylä area.
