Canada Thanksgiving Weekend Dinner

Officer Maître Restaurateur Norman Mastalir, Managing Director of The Fairmont Chateau Whistler, graciously hosted a Thanksgiving Weekend of camaraderie and dining excellence for the Bailliage of Calgary.

In the USA Thanksgiving is observed on the every fourth Thursday of November. The holiday is celebrated in remembrance of the Pilgrim Fathers and in order to give thanks. However, the Canadian Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of the month. The reason for the earlier date in October is the earlier harvest occurring farther to the north. The Canadian holiday comes from different traditions although it is now meant to convey thanks for the harvest.

Over the years, no matter where Norman was in the world, he has invited the Bailliage of Calgary to enjoy his hospitality and they have been overjoyed to accept.

Thanksgiving at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge was a featured family event while he was there. Easter in Bermuda at The Fairmont Southampton introduced the members and guests to tropical delights.



This year we enjoyed the bounty of British Columbia at Whistler, with an outstanding dinner featuring the best of Canadian wines and the finest local delicacies, including Northern Divine Caviar. No one throws a party like Norm!

In my capacity as Bailli Délégué, it was a great pleasure to present Norman with the Officier Commandeur insignia honouring his 30 years as a Chaîne member. His continuous, outstanding dedication to the ideals of the Chaîne and the excellence in service he encourages in every establishment with which he has been involved, cannot be praised highly enough. We are delighted to recognise his demonstration worldwide of the values and fellowship of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs.
