Visit to Tjuvholmen, Oslo’s new arts and business district

On a fine February day, members of the Bailliage of Oslo took the opportunity to visit an art museum and a hotel at Tjuvholmen, Oslo's new spectacular waterfront arts and business district. Both establishments had opened recently, the hotel especially being hailed as the ‘talk of the town’.

Known in the 18th century as ‘Thief Island’ because of its role as a prison islet, the waterfront district of Tjuvholmen is now home to one of Scandinavia's most exciting urban renewal projects. A thriving centre for business, art, and nightlife; it has become a dazzling showcase of contemporary European architecture, culinary experiences, and Scandinavian design. International-calibre restaurants, cosy eateries, and high-quality galleries sit side by side on car-free streets and squares.

The ‘Astrup Fearnley Museum’ is an architectural masterpiece designed by world-renowned architect Renzo Piano. Built as part of the Tjuvholmen Icon Complex, the building is beautifully situated where the tip of the city stretches out into the bay. The museum contains works from some of the world’s most innovative contemporary artists.

The intriguingly-named Thief Hotel is also housed in a spectacular building. Looking out over the canals of Tjuvholmen and the Oslofjord, most of the rooms offer brilliant waterfront views.

The interior of the hotel reflects the innovative spirit of its surroundings: original artwork and furniture with up-to-the-moment design without sacrificing comfort. Design is the common denominator. The 119 rooms show timeless elegance with clear references to contemporary art.



Alongside these sensational rooms is The Restaurant ‘Fru K’ (Mrs K), with its open-to-view kitchen, has already received wide acclaim for Chef Kari Innerå’s innovative menu based on Norwegian food traditions with an international twist.

At the post-tour reception, the party of 35 happy Chaîne members enjoyed an aperitif of well-chilled Jeio Prosecco Brut DOC. The selection of finger foods included Norwegian-produced cheeses, Serrano ham, blinis with bleak roe and crème fraîche, lobster bisque, celery bread and a Valrhona chocolate dessert.



We eagerly look forward to the opening of the rooftop terrace which will be a fantastic dining venue given its panoramic view of the Oslofjord and city of Oslo beyond.
