Portugal Lunch

Vila Nova de Cacela, April 13, 2013

Bailliage of Algarve

In April 2012 we visited the elegant Vistas Restaurant at the Monte Rei Golf and Country Club for an exciting lunch with a Spanish influence. It was such a success that we repeated it this year, albeit with a different but equally exciting menu.

Our host was Confrère Salvador B. de Lucena who is The General Manager responsible for the beautiful complex. Chef Jaime Perez is ex El Bulli in Barcelona which had in the years before its closure in 2011 the reputation as "The Best Restaurant in The World".

Although Monte Rei is a sophisticated luxury golf and country club on Portugal’s Eastern Algarve with its famed Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course it has become an important gastronomic destination due to the culinary concepts developed by Chef Perez. It is set in over 1000 acres in the Eastern Algarve, between Vila Real de Santo António and Tavira and boasts breath-taking views of both the Atlantic Ocean and the dramatic mountain ridge that is the Serra do Caldeirão.

Jaime’s renowned style is a successful combination of Iberian cuisine with a Mediterranean flair focusing on the finest fresh ingredients. As Jaime states “only the best is good enough”.

Together with Salvador’s input he put together an enterprising menu with a number of his signature dishes:

- Chef’s Selection of Tapas
- Amuse-Bouche
- Tuna tartar, wasabi ice cream and two sauces, soya and passion fruit
- Grilled crayfish with sautéed artichokes, sunchoke purée and stew sauce
- Caramelized suckling pig with honey, apple mousse and rocket salad
- Coffee delight with chocolate butter, coffee ice-cream and peanut sauce
- Coffee and petit fours

The wines were carefully chosen to complement the menu and Vice-Échanson Rod Frew was especially satisfied with the choice.

- Espumante Sidónio de Sousa Branco Brut
- Vinho Branco Quinta Seara D’Ordens Reserva 2011, Douro
- Vinho Tinto Passagem Reserva 2009, Douro
- Vinho do Porto Quinta Seara D’Ordens Reserva Tawny

Everyone thought the lunch was excellent. It certainly lived up to the standard of the one we enjoyed last year.
