Turkey Wine Tasting

Istanbul, January 13, 2012

Our first Ordre Mondial wine-tasting event of the year was held at Sans Restaurant where we were introduced to a range of wines from Urla Winery, a state-of-the-art boutique winery established ten years ago in Urla, a small town near Izmir in western Anatolia.

After discovering traces of ancient vineyards on their farm, the owners did much research. This led to the discovery that the area’s long-forgotten principal activity had, for several thousand years, indeed been viticulture.

Today, employing bio-dynamic principles and state-of-the-art technology, wines are produced from vineyards planted with French and Italian grape varieties. These include Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Nero d’Avola and Sangiovese, as well as the Bogazkere and Bornova Misket varieties local to Anatolia.

In the winery only gravity flow is used. There is no pumping so the wines are neither ‘traumatised’ nor lose any of their fine aromas and flavours. Additionally, given the design of the facilities there is a significant energy saving making the winery environmental friendly.

The following rosé, white, red and dessert wines were tasted:
- Serendias Rosé 2011 (a blend of Sangiovese and Syrah)
- Sauvignon Blanc 2011
- Nero d’Avola & Urla Karasi 2010
(Urla Karasi is an ancient local Anatolian variety)
- Tempus 2010
(a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Petit Verdot & Cabernet Franc)
- Symposium 2011
(made from Bornova Misket, a local Anatolian variety)
