France Jeunes Sommeliers

The 2012 National Final of the Jeunes Sommeliers Competition took place throughout the day in the salons and winery of Château Fourney, owned by the Rollet family.

Jean-Pierre Rollet, Bailli Délégué Honoraire of the Bailliage of France, is the heir of a long winemaking tradition. Château Vieux Guinot, a Saint Emilion Grand Cru, has been in his family since 1729.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, the estate grew with the addition of two more châteaux. Most recently, in 1957, Jean-Pierre Rollet bought Château Fourney, another Saint Emilion Grand Cru.

The competition included three different stages: a theory test, a demonstration of serving wines and drinks and a blind tasting session. The panel of judges was made up of professional sommeliers and wine experts.



The winners were announced in the grand tasting room at Château Fourney.

The prizes were awarded to:
1st:    Fabien Bruguera, of the Hôtel/Restaurant Moulin du Roc in Champagnac de Belair (Dordogne)
2nd:    Rémi Mordret, of the Cave Julien de Savignac in Le Bugue  (Dordogne)
3rd:    Jérôme Georges, of the Hôtel Vallée Verte in Munster (Haut-Rhin)




The winner, Fabien Bruguera, (photo on the right) will be taking part in the international final on September 21st in Cape Town, South Africa.

The other participants were Marlène Gouin from the Méridien Beach Plaza Hotel in Monaco, Jérémie Wolf from the Restaurant Au Crocodile in Strasbourg and Arnaud Gauvain from the Restaurant le Pressoir d’Argent of the Grand Hotel in Bordeaux.

There was a generous selection of prizes awarded to the winners and to the other three participants in this national final, including some really spectacular bottles and fantastic vintages from Bordeaux appellations: Château Clerc Milon and others from Mouton Rothschild, Pomerol from Château Mazeyres, St Emilion from Vieux Guinot and Château Fourney, Grand Corbin d’Espagne and Château Lafagnouse.

The winner was awarded a prize from Le Cordon Bleu: a tour and tasting session at a prestigious Parisian establishment, and of course, the trip to South Africa to take part in the final.

The day was presided over by Bernard Seignat, Member of the Conseil Magistral, Chancelier (and acting Bailli Délégué). In his closing words, he took the opportunity to congratulate the nominees and to thank everybody near and far who had contributed to making this competition such a special event in every way, either by their presence or hard work. In particular, Bernard thanked the frontline organisers including Patrick Martin, Echanson, and Claire Veaux, coordinator of the competition.
