Turkey Jeunes Sommeliers

Istanbul, June 5, 2012

The Bailliage of Turkey held its 4th National Final of the Jeunes Sommeliers Competition at the facilities of Turkey’s leading culinary school – the Mutfak Sanatlari Akademisi – in cooperation with the Turkish Sommeliers Association.

This year witnessed an increasing interest within the hospitality industry to participate in the competition, as the interest in developing the profession of sommeliers in the country has become a necessity.



18 young candidates from various hotels and restaurants applied to participate in the competition. All were given one month of wine classes and tastings in order to familiarize themselves with the demands of the competition. The training was conducted by Isa Bal, Sommelier of Europe 2008 and Head Sommelier of world-famous Fat Duck Restaurant at Bray in England. Isa worked in cooperation with the main sponsors of the competition: Kayra Wine Centre and Wines of Turkey.




After due consideration by the panel of judges, Gὂrkem Öztὓrk, from Șans Restaurant in Istanbul, was declared the winner.

The main sponsor of this year’s competition was Wines of Turkey which is a platform established by 12 major wine producers to promote Turkish wines to the world. The companies under the association’s umbrella are: Doluca, Gulor, Kavaklidere, Kayra, Kocabag, LA, Pamukkale, Sevilen, Suvla, Urla, Vinkara, and Yazgan.

Other sponsors were Mutfak Sanatlari Akademisi, San Pellegrino, Acqua Panna, Lilly Coffee, ADCO Wine Importer, Kayra Wine Centre and Pasabahce Denizli.



During the award ceremony reception, all 12 wine producers participating in the Wines of Turkey platform, each had a tasting stand presenting their wines to all the participants and guests.
