Welcoming the arrival of the rains

Liberia Social Club is arguably the hippest establishment in the city of Liberia in the province of Guanacaste.

Vice-Chargé de Missions Brad Schultz discovered this jewel and proposed a dinner in celebration of the rains, which come back to the area during the month of May. After six months without a drop of rain during the dry season, ranchers and gardeners are glad to see the rains returning!

Owner Can Somyurek and his chef Pablo were up to the task and treated members to a very hip menu.

Following champagne and hors d’oeuvres, the first course was presented. A mixed herb salad with edible flowers and edible earth - a breading made from porcini mushrooms, nuts and other ingredients to give it the desired texture. A slice of watermelon bathed in a balsamic reduction served as the base for the greens and flowers.

Next was shrimp bisque, replete with prawns, mussels and clams, flavoured with truffle.

The third course was grilled sea bass served with Costa Rican pumpkin and spinach salsa and caper relish.

An Argentine Pinot Grigio, Las Perdices, accompanied these courses.

The main course was lamb sous-vide with creamy polenta and figs marinated in red wine. This was paired with ‘Les Jamelles’, a Syrah from France.

This Syrah is one of the finest wines in the "Les Jamelles" collection. It comes from three main locations: very old vines planted in the region of Nîmes which is close to the Rhône Valley, the Béziers plain and the Aude Valley, near Carcassonne. A rich and powerful wine, Les Jamelles Syrah has won praise and awards from the press throughout the world.

And finally, the dessert was a delectable cream caramel mousse garnished with wild berries, served with the Costa Rican coffee liqueur, Café Rica.
