Finland - Urho

Bailliage of Finland
Gourmet catering aboard an ice-breaking ship

Its restaurant has been awarded the Chaîne's Professionals' Plaque
" Heads of state from around the world often dine aboard Urho, giving the restaurant a truly international aspect "

Built in 1975, Urho is the oldest icebreaker in the world. In a name-giving ceremony held on March 5, 1975, the President of Finland, Urho Kekkonen, named the largest and most powerful icebreaker built to that date ‘Urho’, his namesake.

With a combination of power and excellent manoeuvrability, Urho is able to provide reliable icebreaking performance in the worst pack ice. Since Urho was commissioned, all 23 winter ports on the Finnish coast have remained open for year-round navigation.

One of the design principles guiding Urho’s construction was its planned role as a PR ship for the highest government executives, a function it has fulfilled for over 30 years.

It is well equipped to host official events: in addition to its restaurant, Urho boasts two saunas, a swimming pool, a gym and a library. Its interior walls are decorated with some quite remarkable works of art from Finnish artists. The plates and crockery are all special order items.

When the former President of Finland, Mrs. Tarja Halonen, left office, a dinner was held on Urho, attended by seven Presidents from different countries. Heads of state from around the world often dine aboard Urho, giving the restaurant a truly international aspect.

But Urho is not exclusively a venue for state officials. The restaurant is open to anyone provided it is booked in advance and the personal information about the guests will be checked by Finnish Security Intelligence Service.
