South Africa’s AGM and Chapitre held at Surval Boutique Olive Estate in the Klein Karoo, in the foothills of the Outeniqua Mountains. The name, which appropriately means “they who bear honey”, derives from a Khoikhoi tribe who left rock paintings to mark their stay.

Oudtshoorn, the nearest town and known as the “ostrich capital of the world”, is home to the largest population of these large flightless birds and their sought-after feathers. Here at the Turnberry Boutique Hotel members and guests gathered for the opening event of the Chapitre. Long-time Chaîne member and Bailli Honoraire Neil Els was the evening’s host going the extra mile to create a unique event.

The guests were first required to sing for their supper - a bawdy Afrikaans ballad resulting in fits of laughter and Bailli Délégué Honoraire François Ferreira spontaneously taking to the dance floor.

“Gourmet Karoo Braai Experience” was the theme. The evening’s culinary hit was Karoo Caviar – delicious roasted marrow bones. Ostrich of course was featured. Despite Els’ quip regarding “chicken for the vegetarians”, there was a splendid array of salads, pickles and preserves. Wines were provided by First Sightings, the southernmost vineyard on the African continent.

Next day members braved the sub-zero temperatures in the Surval chapel for a successful AGM. Having explored and visited local restaurants for lunch, everyone reconvened in the Chapel for the Induction Ceremony. It was conducted by Bailli Délégué Honoraire François Ferreira, in his capacity as Member of the Conseil Magistral, with the assistance of Bailli Délégué Philip Mostert and the Outeniqua committee headed by Bailli Sue Lenferna de la Motte.

Karoo lamb naturally was the star of the Gala Dinner in Surval’s elegant Su Casa Restaurant. All agreed that the rack served with red wine jus was perfectly cooked. Salmon mousse, decadent chocolate fondant with Frangelico chocolate stripes were also firm favourites.

We left with gifts of delicious olive chutney and onion and balsamic relish. Congratulations to the host Bailliage of Outeniqua for a putting on a memorable show.
