Indonesia Dinner

Bailliage of South Jakarta, Indonesia

Sensational food from the wood-fired grill

After much fine dining throughout the year, we hosted a casual dinner making a break from conventional wisdom. Our destination was Up in Smoke and One Eyed Jack, the newly-opened restaurant owned by Bailli Linda Tan.

“Up in Smoke specializes” in artisanal smoked and grilled meat whereas “One Eyed Jack” specializes in modern Japanese Izakaya. Executive Chef Rapha Menchaca combines modern innovative techniques with traditional wood-fire grilling to produce unpretentious, rustic soul food at its best.

Warm, relaxed surroundings provided the right ambience. Guests gathered at the bar for cocktails overlooking the wood-fire grill and open kitchen. The tailor-made menu was a perfect balance of seafood and meat.

The savoury flavour of the chowder was brilliantly paired with the sweet aromatic Gewurztraminer creating impeccable balance. The grilled quail was amazing. Some guests, so engrossed in the dish, started rolling up their sleeves using their hands to clean up every last scrap. The generous serving of beautifully-cooked prime rib was sensational!

The dinner was a great success making a nice change from our customary formal settings.

Special thank yous go to Alistair Speirs, Bailli Provincial of Jakarta, Bob Yanuar, Chargé de Missions Provincial, and Gilles Marx, Conseiller Gastronomique Provincial, for volunteering their time and efforts to organize such a fabulous event.
