Celebrating the Golden Jubilee in style - Part 1

MEXICO CITY, November 28-29

It was 1967 when Jean Berthelot brought the Chaîne to México City and became the country’s first Bailli Délégué. Since those beginnings he has contributed in so many ways to the development of gastronomy and the culinary arts in Mexico as well as to growing the Chaine. Fifty years later, at a special reception in the InterContinental Presidente Mexico City to open the Golden Jubilee programme, a well-deserved tribute was paid to Jean who is now in his 87th year.

Adding to the sense of occasion was the special presence of International Vice-President Marie Jones, not to mention Bailli Délégué Honoraire Carlos Robles-Gil and other senior Bailliage officers, past and present.

The next morning, international visitors, who included members from Hungary, Portugal and Singapore, toured the Teotihuacán Pyramids and then enjoyed lunch with a pre-Hispanic show.

The Induction Ceremony at the St Regis Hotel was presided over by Marie Jones. In the presence of National officers, all nine Baillis from the local Bailliages in Mexico as well as distinguished guests, she promoted existing members to higher grades and formally welcomed new ones wearing their first regalia.

At the celebratory dinner which followed, more than 200 members and guests were regaled with a wonderful menu served in the magnificent ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel.

It was a very special occasion particularly emotive in view of the Mexican mariachi music played for us to conclude the night.

Vive la Chaîne!

CUERNAVACA, November 30th

Bailli of Cuernavaca Mario Castro and his wife Laura were amazing hosts for this all-day excursion to their home city. With traditional margaritas and Johnnie Walker-inspired cocktails they welcomed the visitors at Las Mañanitas Hotel-Restaurant. As a cultural prelude, the group had visited the charming surroundings of the city’s Cathedral and Borda Gardens.

Accompanying the drinks were canapes such as escamole tacos, pig’s trotter, bean tlacoyo, and red ceviche. The splendid colourful plants and shrubs in the garden showed of their best in the perfect weather. Cranes and peacocks walked freely around the guests and of course, posed for a family photo too!

After the reception we adjourned to the terrace for lunch.

It was a fresh and exciting event, the success of which was guaranteed by the perfect weather and the impeccable food and service at Las Mañanitas.

Vive La Chaine!
