International gathering at Château Kirwan

As part of a visit to France and Spain especially taking in several wine producing areas, Bailli Lou Bruno and a group of members from the Bailliage of Westchester (situated within the New York metropolitan area) paid a visit to Château Kirwan at Cantenac in the Margaux appellation of the Médoc.

It was, however, truly an international gathering as Lou had contacted Jean-François Guichard, Bailli of Bordelais, offering the opportunity to his members to participate. Furthermore, International Vice-President Marie Jones happened to be at her home in the Charente region of France so was also able to attend.

Château Kirwan is one of fourteen Third Growths in the Bordeaux Wine Classification of 1855. The history of the estate began with the famous English merchant Sir John Collingwood. Settling in the region, Mark Kirwan, an Irishman, became part of the story by marrying one of the daughters of Sir John Collingwood. In 1760 he inherited the estate, already renowned in Europe and eventually it took his family name. Since 1927 the property has been owned by the renowned Schroder & Schÿler wine company.

The group was hosted by Nathalie Schÿler in the intimacy of the château’s reception and dining rooms. Kirwan’s hospitality has always enjoyed a special reputation. The warmth of welcome extended to us by Nathalie and her team was second to none. As a result - and despite indifferent weather - the senses soared and the pleasures of true art de vivre came alive.

The delicacies on the menu were partnered by exceptional wines, especially the two Kirwan vintages with their typically elegant Margaux appellation fruit personalised by the authenticity of the Kirwan terroir.

After lunch, Nathalie took us on a guided tour of the winery and cellar. The modern, architect-designed facilities (see photo gallery) were indeed impressive!
