Portugal World Chaîne Day

Bailliage of Portugal
Porto, April 13-14, 2019

Cultural, gastronomic and friendly weekend

World Chaîne Day is always a very special day in Portugal, not only because of the international connection with the other Bailliages of the world, but also because we use the occasion to invite the students of our Gastronomy School of the Chaîne and their teachers to discover new horizons and meet with our members.

This year took us to the city of Porto where we all met for a cruise on the Douro river in one of those small boats which used to take the barrels of Port wine down from the remote valleys where it is produced to the warehouses in Vila Nova de Gaia, in Porto.

For most of the participants, it was their first experience of cruising, and passing through a lock was a highlight of the trip. Lunch was served on board and soon it was time to disembark and aim towards the Port warehouse of Sandeman for a visit of their cellars and a lecture on the elaboration of the different types of Port (Ruby, Tawny, LBV, Vintage) followed by a tasting for the older students, teachers and members.

Dinner was at the newly open “George” restaurant on the top floor of the Sandeman’s building, named after the founder of the Sandeman’s dynasty.

The next morning, Sunday, was dedicated to the visit of the Serralves Foundation, whose mission is to raise the general public's awareness concerning contemporary art and the environment. For most of our Gastronomy School’s students, it was also their first contact with modern art, and a fascinating experience.

Once we were reunited with all the students lost in contemplation of the artworks in the gardens of the Foundation, we were able to move to the riverside for a typical Porto-style lunch at one of the oldest restaurants in the town “Chez Lapin”.

A very successful cultural, gastronomic and friendly weekend for World Chaîne Day!
