China Chapitre

Bailliage of China
Shanghai, December 7, 2019

Joint event for Bailliages of Shanghai, Suzhou and Wuxi
" The dinner demonstrated the epitome of the unique ability and pious pursuit of the Chaîne and Camus "

At a joint Chapitre held at the JW Marriott Hotel Shanghai at Tomorrow Square, the Bailliages of Shanghai, Suzhou and Wuxi saw 49 new Chaîne members and nine new Ordre Mondial des Gourmets Dégustateurs (OMGD) members inducted at a ceremony presided over by International Vice-President Marie Jones. She also presented one Silver Commandeur and confirmed several promotions for current members.

In her Inducting Officer’s speech Marie made particular mention of the rich and diverse culinary traditions that China has to offer. Quite apt given that following the ceremony, a magnificent ball was prepared in conjunction with CAMUS, the fifth-largest Cognac producer in the world.

The Gala celebration began with appetizers and champagne in a lobby which was adorned with a traditional horse carriage and decorations reminiscent of a historic high-society French ball.

As well as the Chaîne’s International Vice-President, other guests of honour were Cyril Camus, President of Camus Wines and Spirits and a Chaîne member in Shanghai, and Benoît Guidée, Consul General of France in Shanghai.

222 members and their guests enjoyed the gala dinner, which included ballroom dancing, singers, dancers, and a live band. Steven Weathers, International Channel Shanghai television host and Bailliage of China Chargé de Presse, served as bi-lingual (Mandarin/English) Master of Ceremonies.

Camus Rarissimes Vintage Cognac 1974

In view of the fact that the Chaîne is the world's oldest gastronomic association, the focus of the evening was on the menu. The dinner demonstrated the epitome of the unique ability and pious pursuit of the Chaîne and Camus. Each dish and wine pairing was rich and varied. The cognacs were exquisite.

Sumptuous and delicious caviar started the symphony of food and beverages. Normandy oysters with three different flavours creatively displayed the three colours of the French flag. With a drop of extracted Camus Cognac, the oysters reached their fullest potential through this one-of-a-kind flavouring.

In addition to the outstanding food, a highlight of the evening was the Camus Rarissimes Vintage Cognac 1974. The Rarissimes range offers cognac lovers a unique opportunity to travel back in time, to the days of small, family-run estates. Precious repositories of ancestral expertise, each of these vintage cognacs is moulded by the passing of time and enriched by its long history.

At the close of the evening, Marie Jones and Bailli Délégué Allen Wong presented Chef Konrad Renggli and the staff of the Marriott with the National Bailliage’s plaque of appreciation.

After the dinner, everyone was invited to the after party where there was a free-flow of Camus Extra Elegance Cognac and cocktails.

Vive la Chaîne!
