Belgium New Year's Reception

Bailliage of Belgium
Ghent, January 21, 2020

Hosted by Kaasmeesters Callebaut
" another chapter unfolds a new dawn for the Bailliage of Belgium "

In a jovial and enthusiastic spirit, 20 members and their guests gathered to celebrate not only the arrival of 2020 but also that of the new decade - another chapter unfolds a new dawn for the Bailliage of Belgium with its newly-inducted Bailli Délégué.

We held the reception at the premises of Kaasmeesters Callebaut in Gent’s Groentenmarkt.

There’s always a cheerful buzz in the Groentenmarkt square; the place to be for delicatessen, sweet treats or delicious regional products. At the heart of the square there's an early 19th-century water pump. It is shaped like a high obelisk on a square pedestal. It is still operational and supplied with tap water. The pump was placed on the square for the vegetable hawkers who sold their goods here. Hence the name “Groentenmarkt”, that can be translated as "vegetable market".

Our hosts were Luc Callebaut and Nathalie Vanhaver. Luc is a Maître Rôtisseur. Nathalie was elected best Cheese Monger of the world in 2017.

Naturally it was a “cheesy” event, not only with great combinations of wines but also great dishes. We had oyster with goat’s cheese, dried beef with smoked olive oil and Parmesan, and then a lovely raclette. Dessert was a blue cheese combination with gold.
