Kenya Lunch

Bailliage of Nairobi, Kenya
Nairobi, March 7, 2020

At the prestigious Muthaiga Country Club
" Ivan and Emilia West from Solovino Wines introduced their carefully selected vinous accompaniments "

Thirty-four members and their guests convened at the prestigious Muthaiga Country Club on a bright sunny Nairobi afternoon for the Bailliage’s first event of 2020. Everyone mingled on the veranda enjoying the relaxed social atmosphere.

As a precursor to the meal, a refreshing Italian Prosecco and a classic Pimms cocktail were served to guests with delicious canapes:
- spicy chicken tikka with cucumber raita
- cherry tomato with pistachio-coated mini bocconcini cheese (v)
- minced beef kofta with chili tomato, mint sauce
- curried red lentil with smoked salmon (v)

The setting for the event was the ballroom garden of the esteemed Country Club which enjoys a 105 year old heritage. The lunch was graced by Bailli Délégué Shabnam Nayer together with distinguished members of Kenya’s National Council.

The event wine sponsors, Ivan and Emilia West from Solovino Wines, introduced their carefully selected vinous accompaniments for the courses.

They invited guests to test their wine tasting skills with a blind tasting for which there was an attractive prize to be won. This proved to be a challenging, but fun interlude, generating both heated debate and raucous laughter!

Featuring fish, fowl, beast and bounty of the field, the decadent menu ably demonstrated the culinary excellence of the Muthaiga Club kitchen brigade. The menu culminated in a delectable dessert that was a sample of classic offerings from the legendary Muthaiga Dessert trolley. Truly delightful!

As lunch drew to a close, the service and kitchen brigades led by Executive Chef Joseph Macharia paraded out into the garden where they were warmly applauded.

The event was a great success. The world-class food and the whole event co-ordinated by Resident Manager Michael Krop and his entire team was greatly appreciated by all present.

We look forward to more events like this one where, in the company of Chaîne members and friends, we can continue to enjoy the pleasures of the table.

Vive la Chaîne!

* Ed. Allegedly “58 Guineas” was the price paid in the early 1700s by Sir Robert Walpole (England’s First Lord of the Treasury) to smuggle twenty barrels of claret into the country where it was much in demand by London's wealthy elite.
