Malaysia World Chaîne Day

Bailliage of Sabah, Malaysia
Kota Kinabalu, April 25, 2020

Unprecedented, unstoppable, united
" such fun and a great get together all round "

Unprecedented in every which way around the world, nothing can get in our way from celebrating World Chaîne Day.

Whilst under our country’s “Movement Controlled Order”, we came together spiritually.

So as not to let the MCO dampen the Chaine spirit of camaraderie, the “Grand Plan” was for each member to prepare and cook a dish at home and share that virtually with the other Bailliage members. Although in the confines of our own homes, we all had a great time together, spiritually celebrating World Chaine Day!

It was such fun and a great get together all round.

We “virtually” and with imagination in our taste buds, enjoyed a variety of dishes from our Bailli, Datuk Gordon Leong. He came up with an auspicious Chinese dish that signified wealth and prosperity often served during Chinese New Year. It consisted of abalone, oysters, black sea moss, lily flower bulbs, mushrooms and dried scallops. Louis Roederer Cristal added additional glamour to the wonderful occasion.

Vice-Chargée de Missions Keyna Fung prepared sous-vide salmon served with hollandaise sauce. A 2015 Forest Edge Pinot Noir from Brokenwood was an amazing pairing.

At their home, Ben and Kerry Yong Nair, respectively Vice-Chargé de Presse and Vice-Chargée de Missions, cooked a local classic of Malaysian satay over charcoal.

And of course what meal would be complete without dessert? For example, the Shangri-La’s Executive Chef, Vice-Conseiller Culinaire Daniel Shepherd, conjured up a mouth-watering apple tarte Tatin paired with Haut Brion’s inspired Clarendelle Amberwine.

Needless to say we were all wishing we could have tried each other’s culinary creations and had a sip of each other’s wines, especially Datuk Gordon’s Louis Roederer Cristal!

Not to mention Maître Hôtelier Rachael Harman’s treasured Wolf Blass Black Label opened for this special occasion and Vice-Chancelier Nasip Assan’s 2011 Bolgheri Sassicaia which left us drooling.

Although we could only feast visually, our tummies were full and our glasses were raised as a united Bailliage to another successful Chaine event, and certainly one we will never forget!

The thought of celebrating this special day with ZOOM did cross our minds. However, we decided against it so as not to disrupt our dinner with family.

All in all, a very wonderful and enjoyable experience to wash away our STAY HOME blues.
