Donation of a gas cooker

A unique revolution centred on food and catering is taking place on the streets of Cissin, a neighbourhood in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, supported by the Bailliage of Italy and in particular the Bailliage of Milan.

Food insecurity is the main cause of undernourishment among many African countries affecting school performance and work efficiency. In the Cissin district Tamat, an Italian NGO, is working on a development project to solve this problem. Creating short supply chains connecting producers with consumers has benefits of accessibility and price while maintaining nutritional and organoleptic qualities.

Setting up a community restaurant was part of the project where Cissin’s disadvantaged women and unemployed young people could earn their living. Promoting traditional recipes made with local produce and cooking tasty, balanced meals at an affordable price plus job opportunities makes for a great result. Research on taste and nutritional factors in conjunction with local producers demonstrates the potential for good food accessible to everyone.

And the missing ingredient became apparent - a high quality gas cooker essential for healthy, tasty, nutritional dishes! The Bailliage of Milan swung into action and, as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, wanted to offer practical support.

Mareno Ali SpA, an Italian company, has been manufacturing and supplying quality products worldwide since the 1900’s. Partnering with Mareno, the gift of  a commercial range (including spare parts) was donated to the Burkina Faso project. Two months later the cooker was installed dazzling everyone with its characteristics and quality.

The project, thanks to the important contribution of the Bailliages of Italy and Milan through Patrizia Spada, Italy’s dedicated ACCR Chargée de Missions, proves that limited resources does not mean a poor diet. The next step is to organise cooking courses to improve Cissin’s eating habits.

The communities of Cissin and Tamat sincerely thank the following for their generosity: Dr. Giorgio Bruno Rossi (Bailliage of Milan), Dr. Eugene Briguglio (Vice-Chargé de Missions of Milan), Dr. Alberto Servienti (Vice-Chargé de Presse of Milan), Dr. Luigi Berti, President of the ALI Group, Dr. Fabrizio Rocco, General Manager of Mareno, and Bailli Délégué of Italy Dr. Roberto Zanghi.
