OMGD China Rum Tasting Dinner

Bailliage of China
Beijing, May 25, 2019

And a bottle of rum!
" The Masterclass consisted of three tasting sessions with food intermissions "

Twenty-two attended this Ordre Mondial des Gourmets Dégustateurs (OMGD) event at Vinotheque in The Kerry Hotel. We welcomed three ambassadors: His Excellency Stephen Seedansingh and his wife Alyssa from Trinidad and Tobago; His Excellency Robert Sterling Quant from Bahamas; His Excellency François Jackman from Barbados.

The programme included learning about rum and paying tribute to this special spirit from the Caribbean. Richard Lamse led us on a voyage to discover more and gave us a taste of his personal collection. We set sail from Beijing to the Caribbean as we learned the intricacies of 14 different rums. Each showcased different styles and production methods from a variety of countries ranging from Nicaragua to Barbados.

The Masterclass consisted of three tasting sessions with food intermissions. Chef Johnston Ang prepared exquisite dishes, including a special caviar flown in especially for this event. Twenty types of cheese, Iberico ham, Tomahawk steaks, as well as pasta and desserts made a true feast. It was a veritable culinary delight.

When the third tasting session finished a surprise awaited us at the after party across in the lobby at Centro. The Caribbean band “One Drop” serenaded us with classic songs and beautiful music from the region on a set of steel drums. We were also fortunate enough to have a carnival dancer and cigar-rolling station.

It was a wonderful, unique event that would have even made Jimmy Buffett jealous!
