Bailliage of United Arab Emirates

Classic versus Modern wine styles
" an inspired gulab jamun tiramisu finished off a wonderful experience "

For our latest OMGD event, we were hosted by the newly-opened Martabaan Restaurant by Hemant Oberoi in the Emirates Palace Hotel. Chef Hemant is world renowned, having served many statesmen and royalty at the Taj Palace Hotel, and recognised for his bravery during the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008.

The wines for the evening featured two wines for each group of courses, chosen by Échanson Sandeep Sathees, allowing us to appreciate and compare classic wines such as Sancerre, Chablis, and Côte-Rôtie with some modern counterparts. In addition, we featured two different styles of sweet wines.

Our wines for the evening were:

2017 Sancerre - Loire Valley, France
2017 Brancott Estate Sauvignon Blanc - Marlborough, New Zealand

2016 Chablis, Domaine Daniel Seguinot - Burgundy, France
2017 Corralillo Chardonnay - San Antonio Valley, Chile

2015 Côte-Rôtie, J. Denuziere - Rhône Valley, France
2015 Lammershoek Syrah - Swartland, South Africa

2012 Pillitteri Estates Vidal - Ontario, Canada
2014 Jackson Estate Botrytis Riesling - Marlborough, New Zealand

Restaurant Manager Sujay Joshi and Executive Chef Gaurav Kathawate had crafted a superb menu with subtle flavours and spices, which allowed us to appreciate the different nuances of the wines.

With the Sauvignons we tried three amuses-bouches: Haas avocado with quinoa; Crab butter garlic pao; Murg malai tikka.

These taste tantalisers were followed by “Grazing goat” and Masala sea bass with spinach and mushrooms partnering the Chardonnays.

Moving on to the Syrah wines we were delighted by the main courses of Martaban ka meat, “Can can” chicken and Chicken biryani.

Last but not least, an inspired gulab jamun tiramisu finished off a wonderful experience with the dessert wines.
