'A journey through India'
" The evening ended with a well-deserved round of applause for the kitchen and service brigades "

Continuing our trend of offering unique out-of-the-box culinary experiences, the Bailliage collaborated this time with The Marina Restaurant. This authentic seafood-accented Indian restaurant in Yangon was perfect for an evening of delicious Indian food paired with great wines from around the globe.

The theme of the dinner was “a journey through India” - from Kashmir to Kerala.

The Marina team, led by Chef Sujit Mandal and owner John Wesley, did a fine job in creating an authentic ambience to accompany the exceptional food and spirits.

The menu included local Yangon Craft Brewery Burbrit’s own “Indian Pale Ale” and “Irish Red Ale” which were great with the spices of Chef Sujit’s famous corn baskets and the Lassoni prawns. Mini Idlys with sambar did not disappoint demonstrating the effect of spices this evening had promised.

For the evening’s wines we followed the advice that German Rieslings are hands down the best wines to pair with Indian food. The slight sweetness they often possess balances out the spiciness. Hence a Robert Weil Riesling Dry 2015 from Germany perfectly paired masala roast chicken, mutton rogan josh, dal makhini, jhinga prawn curry as well as a Kerala fish curry with raw mango. Assorted naan breads, malabar paratta, roti, kulcha with a special sonachur saffron rice accompanied the dishes. The red served was Katnook Founder's Block Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 from Australia.

Dessert - gulab jamun, kulfi, carrot halva and payasam kheerwas - was served with a rare speciality, the legendary Commanderia sweet wine from Cyprus. This wine represents an ancient wine style documented in Cyprus way back to 800 BC. It has the distinction of being the world's oldest named wine still in production, with the name Commandaria dating back to the crusades in the 12th century.

The evening ended with a well-deserved round of applause for the kitchen and service brigades. Members enjoyed the single malt whisky in the nearby Belmond Governor’s Residence.
